In 1990, Sega president Hayao Nakayama sought a mascot to compete with Mario. Naoto Ohshima submitted a design of a human in pajamas resembling Theodore Roosevelt; while rejected as a protagonist, the team retooled it into the main antagonist to represent themes of "machinery" and "development." Originally named Doctor Eggman in Japan, Dean Sitton renamed him Doctor Ivo Robotnik for the 1991 Western localization without consulting developers. Later games reconciled this by establishing "Robotnik" as his true name and "Eggman" as a derisive nickname he accepted after Sonic Frontiers. Eggman is characterized as a certifiable genius with an IQ of 300, obsessed with creating the Eggman Empire (also known as Robotnikland or Eggmanland). Despite his maniacal laughter and abominable declarations, he secretly respects Sonic's determination and has formed alliances against greater threats like the Space Colony ARK crashing into Earth.

In Their Own Story

Eggman made a cameo in the 1991 TeraDrive game Puzzle Construction before his full debut in the Sega Genesis title Sonic the Hedgehog later that year. In most 2D games, he appears as a boss at the end of nearly every level, requiring eight hits to defeat using various machines. Notable achievements include unleashing Chaos in Sonic Adventure and building Eggmanland in Sonic Unleashed. While normally enemies with Sonic, he has partnered with him against the Marauders in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Outside platformers, he starred in Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (1993) and competed against Bowser in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. His likeness spans comics, animated series, and the live-action Paramount films where Jim Carrey portrays him starting in 2020.
