Rings
Golden hoops that grant invincibility and score points in a world of speed.
Rings are the iconic golden currency and survival mechanic of the Sonic universe, appearing as simple yet mystical floating hoops scattered across every corner of Mobius and beyond. While they function primarily as a collectible resource for speedsters to gather during their high-velocity adventures, their true power lies in their protective ability. A single Ring serves as an invulnerability shield; if a hero collects even one before suffering damage, the impact is negated, and the Rings are scattered rather than lost instantly.

Lore & Background
Beyond their utility as currency for purchasing items from allies like Tails or Eggman's robots, Rings act as a spiritual buffer against physical harm. When a hero holds a Ring, it creates an invisible barrier that absorbs the force of an attack, causing the character to simply drop all collected Rings rather than be defeated. This mechanic has become legendary, symbolizing resilience; as long as one golden hoop remains in hand, hope is never lost, and the race can continue.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the Green Hill Zone, carrying the scent of salt and pine as Sonic dashed across a crumbling bridge. A massive Badnik lunged from the shadows, its claws aimed squarely at his chest. In that split second, time seemed to slow. Sonic's eyes darted to a single golden hoop floating just inches above the cracked pavement. He twisted mid-stride, snatching it with a blur of blue motion. The robot's attack connected, but instead of pain, there was only a shower of gold sparks as his inventory emptied into the air, leaving him safe and ready to run again.
Reader's Guide
Rings function as both a score counter and a life-saving shield in the chaotic world of Sonic. When collected, they float around the character's head or are stored internally, increasing their total count. The primary rule is simple: possessing at least one Ring grants temporary invincibility against any form of damage.
If a hero with Rings takes an attack, they do not lose a life; instead, all collected Rings scatter in a wide arc across the screen, giving the player a chance to reclaim them. However, if a character is hit while holding zero Rings, they are defeated and must restart from the last checkpoint or save point.
These artifacts are wielded by almost every major hero, though Sonic's speed allows him to gather them most efficiently. While primarily used for protection, high Ring counts are often required to access hidden areas, defeat certain bosses, or transform into Super forms when combined with Chaos Emeralds.
